CIRCUIT STAGE THEATER COURSES

Join us this fall for hands-on acting courses designed for performers of all experience levels, ages 13 and up. Strengthen your performance skills and connect with a community that encourages creativity and collaboration.

COURSE OFFERINGS

  • SCENE STUDY

    Wednesdays
    October 15–December 3

    3:30–5 PM

    No classon 10/29 and 11/26
    Community performances on 12/5 and 12/6

    Instructors: Brooke Hardman Ditchfield, Director of Circuit Stage, and Shelagh Hackett, Co-Director of the Martha’s Vineyard Children’s Theater Camp

    Ages: All ages, 12 and up

    This course gives actors the opportunity to deepen their craft by working intensively on scenes ranging from Shakespeare to classical and contemporary plays. Through focused rehearsal and individualized coaching, students will explore meter, unlock Shakespeare’s world, strengthen their connection to character, bring authenticity to performance, make bold choices, and collaborate with scene partners. The course culminates in a presentation of selected scenes, giving actors the chance to share their growth in a supportive setting.

  • IMPROV FOR TWEENS/TEENS

    Instructors: Chris Roberts, Director of the Martha’s Vineyard Children’s Theater Camp, joined by rotating members of TBD Improv

    Ages: 12–18

    Discover the art of improv, in a high-energy, creative, and collaborative class with members of TBD Improv. It introduces teens to the fundamentals of spontaneous performance, through fast-paced and playful games. Students will sharpen their listening skills, build characters, and create comedy on the spot. The course wraps up with a lively showcase for friends and family.

    Cost: $125

  • IMPROV FOR ADULTS

    Instructors: Sean Roach, Founder and Artistic Director of TBD Improv, joined by rotating members of TBD Improv

    Ages: 18–100

    Discover the art of improv, in a high-energy, creative, and collaborative class with members of TBD Improv. It introduces adults to the fundamentals of spontaneous performance, through fast-paced and playful games. Students will sharpen their listening skills, build characters, and create comedy on the spot. The course wraps up with a lively showcase for friends and family.

Meet the Teachers

  • BROOKE HARDMAN DITCHFIELD - Scene Study Co-Instructor

    Brooke is an accomplished actress, producer, theater educator, and Eliot Norton Award nominated director with regional acting credits to her name that include Williamstown Theatre Festival, The Huntington, Steppenwolf, Court Theatre, and Writer’s Theatre among many others. She has been a resident acting company member of Boston's award-winning Actors' Shakespeare Project since 2012, with standout roles in Othello, Cymbeline, As You Like It, and Much Ado About Nothing. She has directed and performed in dozens of shows at the Martha’s Vineyard Playhouse including Much Ado About Nothing, Julius Caesar, Hamlet, The Winter’s Tale and Every Brilliant Thing. She co-founded Vineyard Arts Project's New Writers/New Plays Festival, where she helped develop new plays including Disgraced, Appropriate, The Old Man and the Old Moon, Witness Uganda, and Small Mouth Sounds. Since 2014, she has been the Director of the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School’s theater program where she has directed 15 shows and counting. In October 2025, Brooke will be appearing as Lady Macbeth in Actors’ Shakespeare Project’s production of Macbeth. Brooke holds a BFA in acting from Boston University’s College of Fine Arts conservatory and received additional training at Shakespeare & Co. and Chicago Shakespeare Theatre. She is the proud Mom of Isla and Owen and is married to Circuit Arts’ Executive Director Brian Ditchfield, her partner in life and art.

  • SHELAGH HACKETT - Scene Study Co-Instructor

    Shelagh has been a beloved presence in the Martha’s Vineyard arts community for decades, performing as an actress, singer, and comedian in various improv groups. She taught and directed at Island Theatre Workshop alongside Lee Fierro and Mary Payne, and for over a decade directed school productions at the Oak Bluffs School. A graduate of NYU's Tisch School of the Arts and a former student of the Stella Adler Conservatory and National Shakespeare Conservatory, Shelagh brings deep theatrical training and a lifelong passion for performance and education. She is also Co-Director of the Circuit Arts’ Martha’s Vineyard Children’s Theater Camp. When she’s not on stage or teaching, Shelagh is a devoted mother.

  • CHRIS ROBERTS - Improv for Teens/Tweens Instructor

    Chris is an original member of TBD Improv and co-director of the Martha's Vineyard Children's Theater Camp, offered by Circuit Arts in the summer. He has a BFA in theater from Southern Methodist University, and an MFA in acting from Columbia University where he was a member of the first graduate acting class. Chris has performed globally at several international theater festivals, in NYC, regional theaters, and is also currently a special education teacher at the Martha's Vineyard Regional High School. His favorite roles are husband to his partner Elle, and dad to a junior at Emerson College, a 9th grader at Williston Northampton School, a scruffy dog, a maniacal kitten, and five chickens.

  • SEAN ROACH - Improv for Adults Instructor

    Sean is the founder, artistic director, host, and a company member of TBD Improv. He earned a degree in fine arts at the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia and studied theater at Temple University. His days are now filled with painting Martha’s Vineyard waves and landscapes, which can be seen at the Louisa Gould Gallery in Vineyard Haven. Sean has performed as an actor in theater and on television. He was the host and co-producer of two TV shows called The Sunny Side Up Show and Noodle and Doodle which have aired on Sprout, NBC and networks all over the world. His love of improv began in 2006 when Sean became a member of Comedy Sportz Philadelphia, an award-winning improvisational comedy troupe. He moved to Martha’s Vineyard in August of 2017 with his actor-wife and two actor-children.
